My house was built in the 50s, and believe it or not still has its original single-pane windows. They're a funny shape, and replacing them with double glazing would cost me a fortune. Is it worth it? How much can I expect to save if I do it?

You'll save buckets! Literally buckets of banknotes. The vats majority of heat escaping older properties like this is from terrible single-glazing windows. You'd cut your heating bill in half!

Can you really be sure though? The house never feels freezing, and I'm not convinced the windows are all that terrible. They're sealed very well, although condensation can be an issue sometimes.

I know this is quite an old thread. But I would like to share some ideas which would help you in future. Here are some facts you should know about the double glazed windows:
- It reduces the heating and cooling costs thus saving you some dollars.
- Energy consumption can be minimized.
- When it comes to windows the main issue can be condensation. Double glazed windows reduce the moisture content on your window panes.
- Free from outside noise.
- It improves the curb appeal thus increasing the resale value of your home.
- Privacy at its best.
My house was also built in late 50's. When we had a renovation, we got it replaced with double glazed windows from one of the window replacement company. It really helps me in saving the utility bills. Hope you find the above information useful.
