Is it possible for the skill and experience of the person installing doors & windows to affect how much energy the fittings let escape? If so, is it a considerable margin?

Oh absolutely. If the installer has done a botched job, it will certainly effect how energy efficient the window is. I lived in a new build house about 5 years ago, and everything that had been done in the house was installed improperly. One of the windows wouldn't even open properly because the hole they'd made for the actual window was slightly too small and slanted!

That sounds dreadful! Some of these new builds can be appalling. Put me in a Victorian house any day of the week!
